PIN FOR YOUR CHILD
Protecting Your Child’s Identity with an IRS IP PIN – A Must for Houston Families
At Lone Star Tax Solutions, we understand that your child’s future starts with protecting their identity today. That’s why we help families across the country secure IRS Identity Protection PINs (IP PINs) for their children—an essential step in defending against tax-related identity theft.

What Is an IP PIN and Why Does Your Child Need One?
An IP PIN is a six-digit code issued by the IRS to prevent someone else from filing a fraudulent tax return using your child’s Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). While identity theft often targets adults, children are increasingly at risk—especially because their credit reports often go unchecked for years.
By securing an IP PIN FOR YOUR CHILD, you:
-
Prevent unauthorized individuals from filing a return under your child’s name.
-
Add a critical layer of protection to your child’s financial future.
-
Ensure that only you or a verified tax professional can file on your child’s behalf.
Who Can Request an IP PIN for a Child?
Parents and legal guardians in US may request an IP PIN for a minor if:
-
The child has a valid SSN or ITIN.
-
The parent or guardian can verify their own identity with the IRS.
-
Documentation is available to prove the relationship (such as a birth certificate or court order).

How to Apply for a Child’s IP PIN
There are two main ways to secure an IP PIN for a minor, depending on whether your child has already been a victim of identity theft:
Option 1
In-Person Appointment at an IRS Office
If your child has not been a confirmed victim of identity theft, the IP PIN request must be handled in person.
Option 2
If Your Child Has Been a Victim of Identity Theft
If your child has experienced identity theft and the case has been resolved, the IRS may automatically issue an annual IP PIN.

In this case, you will receive IRS Notice CP01A by mail each January with the six-digit IP PIN required for that tax year’s return.

Important Things to Remember:
-
Each IP PIN is valid for one calendar year only.
-
A new PIN is issued every January to maintain protection.
-
Never share your child’s IP PIN with anyone except your trusted tax preparer.
-
Filing without the correct PIN may cause delays or IRS rejections.
